What Is A TRV Extension?

The full name for a TRV extension is a telescopic radiator valve extension. These are different from your standard extensions as they can be adjusted in size which allows for flexible installation. For example, this telescopic valve extension can be adjusted from 20mm to 70mm. They are great for if you are unsure of the exact size you need or if you need to make further adjustments.

What Size Extension Tail Do I Need?

If your pipework is too short for the new radiator then you’ll most likely need a valve extension. These come in various sizes so be sure to measure the pipe before ordering. If you need help working out which bit needs measuring please contact our team and we can help you out with this.

Are Valve Extensions Universal In Size?

Radiator extension tails are mainly found in 15mm to match common pipework used in properties, but not all pipework is 15mm so have a measure of your pipe thickness before ordering.

How To Extend Radiator Pipework?

Installing a radiator extension tail can be a simple task, but in some cases it can be a little more difficult so be aware that you might have to cut or remove existing pipework if needed. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself then we recommend asking a plumber to install them as it can be a costly fix if you incorrectly cut your pipes.
Here are the steps for installing a valve extension:

  • Step 1: Be sure to grab any tools you’ll need like a measuring tape, pipe wrench and the extension and valve you are installing. Additional tools may include a pipe cutter and compression fittings.
  • Step 2: Turn off your heating system, this is a very important step to stop leaks while you are working and will cool your pipes if the radiator has been on recently, be sure to wait until it is fully cooled to avoid any accidents.
  • Step 3: Measure and plan before you remove or add anything. It will help you work out the size required. Take note of anything that could block or obstruct the installation, move the obstructions if possible.
  • Step 4: If you’ve measured and noticed you’ll have to cut or remove pipework then this is the difficult part. Difficult as in you’ll have to be precise or you could do more damage than good. Carefully measure the part of the pipe you’ll be cutting and be aware of surrounding pipework. Use a pipe cutter to make a neat cut and remove the section carefully. Again if you are unsure about doing this contact your local plumber.
  • Step 5: Attach the extension tail to your pipe and valve, Tighten and secure the fittings to prevent any leaks. But be sure not to over tighten as this can damage your pipe and valve.
  • Step 6: Once you are confident that everything is secure and tightened you’ll need to do a test. Turn on your heating system and check for any dripping or leaks, if you find any then you might need to tighten more. Be sure to turn off the heating system again and wait for it to cool before doing so.
