Winter is coming! Naturally, as the temperature outside goes down, we want the temperature in our homes to go up and keep us snug and cosy throughout the chilly season. Sadly, this means that our energy bills go up too. However, there are several things you can do to keep your bills low this year. Little changes can make a big difference!

How To Cut Down

Replace Your Lightbulbs and Fittings with Energy-Efficient Alternatives

Using energy-efficient bulbs can make a huge difference to your annual bill. Opt for LED bulbs, which might be pricier than ordinary bulbs, but each LED light bulb costs £1.71 a year to run! They also last much longer than old-style bulbs, so you won’t have to replace them as often.

Insulate Your Home and Banish Draughts

Draughts around the windows, external doors and chimneys can make a home feel very cold and encourage you to turn the heat up, which then escapes through the gaps causing the draughts. If you insulate these draughty areas, you keep the heat in and save money. Try draught excluders at the base of your front and back doors and draught-proofing strips around the windows. Consider insulating your loft and walls too, to conserve that precious heat.

Ditch The Tumble Dryer and Use a Clothes Airer Or Clothes Line

Tumble driers are notorious for burning through energy, and in the winter when you can’t use an outdoor clothesline to dry your clothes, it will rake your energy bill up demonstrably by using the drier regularly.
Try using a clothes airer near the radiators instead and see how much you save!

Fill Your Dishwasher and Washing Machines

No more half-empty loads – it’s such a waste of money! Instead, run these appliances less often and let them do their job. Help your dishwasher by rinsing everything in cold water before you put it in. And if you have any tough stains, try treating your clothing with stain removers before you put them in the washing machine to help it along too.

Reduce Your Heating and Water Temperature By A Couple Of Degrees

A small reduction in temperature will make a big difference to your energy bill without actually making much difference to you and how warm you feel in your home. Try it, you’ll be surprised.

Turn Off Standby Appliances and Unnecessary Lights

We all forget to do this but leaving appliances on standby when they’re not in use can cost you an extra £30 a year. Make it a habit to switch off and unplug these standby appliances (such as toaster, kettle, TV, microwave, DVD player, computer, etc).

The same goes for lights. Why leave a light on in an empty room? Switch it off and save yourself money!

Don’t Charge Your Phone All Night Every Night

Your phone should only need a couple of hours to charge, so if you make sure you charge it up for a couple of hours during the day or evening, then unplug it and only charge it when it runs down. You don’t need to leave it charging all night, it uses energy needlessly.

Have Shorter Showers and Fewer Baths

If you reduce your shower time by even a minute or two per shower and have baths just as an occasional treat, then you will probably see quite a difference in your usage. You’ll save water this way too.

Wash Your Clothes at A Lower Temperature

You don’t need to wash your clothes at 50 degrees. You don’t even need to wash them at 40! You can wash your clothes in cold water if you treat stains manually and invest in a decent laundry detergent that cleans even in cold water.
