Introduction

Like the majority of today's appliances, radiators are starting to undergo a modern makeover and you may have noticed more chrome-finished radiators popping up in the households of today. In such a vast market, however, this begs the question - just why are chrome radiators suddenly becoming so popular?

So, What Are the Advantages of Chrome Radiators?

It can be said that the most attractive quality when purchasing a chrome radiator is that they're more stylish than their traditionally painted or cast iron counterparts.

It's no secret that people are increasingly opting for a modern aesthetic in their homes and, subsequently, will more often than not want trendier radiators to match. When paired with an affordable price point, a variety of styles and quick delivery, it's easy to see why chrome radiators have become one of the most sought-after heating devices on the market.

Are Chrome Radiators Efficient?

Chrome is a beautiful, sleek material, but you might wonder if it's an efficient one. It can be assuring to know that as well as looking great, chrome radiators have an excellent heat output that's better than some conventional white models you may commonly find on the market.

Chrome radiators have become a staple in most domestic bathrooms as the material has proven to be fantastic for drying towels and garments. When not in use, the polished, reflective surface can give the illusion of added space in even the smallest of rooms, making this product extremely versatile.

As well as giving the pretence of grandeur in a room, chrome radiators can prove to be very space-saving, compared to other bulkier styles, with a slimmer profile and compact design - when combining a great looking item with great functionality, what's not to like? Are There Any Disadvantages to Chrome Radiators?

With all this being said, there are some drawbacks to consider when it comes to chrome radiators just like with any other product on the market. Despite chrome being a luxurious finish on a radiator, it can be hard to keep clean from dreaded fingerprints and surface scratches; with this being said, chrome radiators can look amazing all year round with the proper maintenance and TLC. As chrome radiators are made by applying a coating onto another metal using electrolysis, usually brass or mild steel, they're susceptible to peeling and rusting in areas of high moisture e.g. bathrooms or wet rooms - this is where stainless steel has been deemed superior to chrome as it's resistant to rust and corrosion when exposed to moisture in the air.

However, this all comes at a cost as stainless steel radiators tend to sit at a much higher price point compared to chrome. When taking the science of it all into account, nine times out of ten, a chrome radiator will always cost less than a stainless steel one; this is because electrolysis is a lot cheaper as a manufacturing process than producing high-quality stainless steel alloys. It should also be considered that performance and efficiency differ between the two with the stainless steel radiator ultimately being in a league of its own. Stainless steel conducts heat better than any other standard radiator, not to mention it's 15% more efficient than chrome. As well as this, it retains heat and goes on projecting heat for much longer, resulting in real savings accumulated in the long run.

Is Stainless Steel A Better Alternative?

If budget allows, the initial extra outlay that comes with purchasing a stainless steel radiator can often pan out to be worth it in the long run; they require much less maintenance and typically come with a lengthy guarantee, often lasting for a lifetime. On the other hand, however, this doesn't always prove to be the best option if you don't have a large enough budget for every radiator or end up changing your mind further down the line due to differing tastes. Both chrome and stainless steel radiators are identical in appearance with a sleek, highly polished finish. Still, it all comes down to whether aesthetics or functionality matters more to the individual. Like most things in life, what you get is what you pay for and the same applies to radiators.

Can Chrome Radiators Be Repaired?

Although the more traditional, painted radiators have started to fall out of fashion recently, they do have an advantage over chrome radiators because if wear and tear cause flaking in the future, they can be easily touched up and painted without having to substitute the entire unit.

Due to the plating on chrome radiators, they can be easily chipped if they're knocked or dropped during installation; this in turn can lead to rust and the coating to start to peel if exposed to water for prolonged periods. Theoretically, this could end up being a costly issue if you need to replace a radiator every few years, but can be avoided if the necessary measures are carried out e.g. appropriate ventilation using recommended cleaners to prevent corrosion.

People often underestimate the complex, industrial process that is inevitable with chromium plating; the coating is never 'painted on' or applied by hand, highlighting even further why one should take the time to research how to care for a chrome radiator properly.

Are Chrome Radiators Fight For You?

After taking all of the above into account, it can be deduced that the biggest draw towards purchasing a chrome radiator would have to be price. If manufacturing costs are low, purchase costs for the consumer will be low - if you need to buy multiple radiators on a budget then Chrome is the way to go.

Low costs, however, bring less efficient heat conductivity than chrome's more expensive counterparts such as stainless steel and aluminium. When you take into account how much trends have changed in design over the last 20 years or so, there's nothing to say that something else will eventually overtake chrome as the most sought-after product in the heating market.

For the time being though, chrome looks like it's here to stay and it's easy to see why. If you have any questions, please contact us today. We have an award-winning team who are waiting to assist you in any way they can.
