Do you need to replace your radiators? If the answer is yes, then you may be wondering if they need to go back to the same position. The answer is that just because a radiator has been placed under a window or an exterior wall, it doesn't mean that you can't move it to another part of the room. Due to new advances in radiator technology, together with modern homes, you now have more options when it comes to choosing where to position that new radiator. Below we offer a quick guide on where to position a radiator.

Consider The Size

One important factor that you need to consider when choosing where to position your radiator is the size of the radiator. The good news is that today's radiators are available in a range of sizes and shapes, allowing them to be placed into the most awkward of spaces, including narrow alcoves.

vertical radiators are ideally placed in that narrow hallway, or when used as a towel radiator in a small bathroom or en-suite. Our bathroom radiators will help with these decisions, and if you're really tight for space then don't forget to check out our small radiators.

Where is the best place to position a radiator?

What About Positioning It Under The Window?

If you prefer to keep your radiator under the window, then, by all means, keep it there. This has been the preferred choice for decades, but now there are so many more options available to you.

Although you don't need to keep your radiator under the window, it may in fact be the best place to keep it, especially if in a room without double glazing. This is because it can help to keep out those unwanted cold draughts. If you do have double glazing and a well-insulated room, then there is no reason to keep your radiator under the window. Move it to any wall and make a feature of it. Today there are many different styles to choose from, including mirror radiators, traditional radiators and column radiators.

Don't Place It Near Furniture

One golden rule that you must always follow when deciding where to place a radiator, is that of not placing it near any large pieces of furniture. This includes not blocking the radiator with a sofa, table or bookcase. It is therefore very important that you think carefully about the layout of your room, how you use your room and the furniture that you wish to keep. If your sofa can only be positioned against a certain wall, then choose another wall for your radiator. What About Behind A Door?

Many homeowners with limited space, for example in a study or bathroom, ask if they can place a radiator behind a door. If this is your only option, as there is no other available wall space, then it's good to know that you can place a radiator behind a door. The only problem arises when the area that leads from the door is cold, so for example into the upstairs landing, as this may mean that the heat goes into this space rather than the room. It's also worth mentioning that you need enough space in which to open the door. So if you have an alternative wall, use it.

Consider Any Pipework And Pipe Covers

Another huge consideration in deciding where to position your radiator is the available pipework. You may think that the current pipework will determine where the radiator should be placed, but this shouldn't be the case. It is usually fairly easy to move a radiator and to install new pipework, allowing you to move the radiator to your preferred location. If you are worried about the aesthetics of any pipework then there is always the option to use pipe covers to give you that additional freedom when choosing where to place your radiator.

Your Style Of Radiator Needs To Work With The Room

When you are considering where to place your radiator you need to look at the space that is available and what style of radiator you wish to use. When it comes to choosing kitchen radiators you may wish to opt for a traditional horizontal radiator in a chrome finish that is to be placed on a feature wall. Alternatively, if space is limited then a tall, vertical radiator in a high gloss finish would be a better option. Choose your style of radiator and make it match both the style and space in the room.

Choose A Low Level Radiator

Have you ever considered installing a low level radiator? Never heard of them? Well, this style of radiator is incredibly popular and is made for those small nooks and crannies when a standard radiator simply won't fit. They are also ideal when needing to heat a small garden room or loft when windows are low with limited wall space. These radiators are just as powerful as standard radiators, they're just on the smaller side.

The Convector Radiator

What about installing convector radiators? This is a sensible choice when the only option is to place a radiator on a wall that is obscured by large pieces of furniture. The convector radiator works by heat being emitted from the top of the radiator, as opposed to the heat coming from the front of the radiator. These can also be known as compact radiators in some instances.

The Electric Wall Mounted Radiator

Finally, what about installing an electric wall mounted radiator? This type of radiator does give you that extra flexibility as you don't have to take into consideration any plumbing or central heating needs. The electric radiator can be placed anywhere and on any wall. In fact, the electric radiator is often used on a feature wall to great decorative effect. The new modern wall mounted electric radiator no longer needs to be hidden away.
